Black Poetry Theatre, Durham
Black Poetry Theatre is looking for poets, singers and performing artists to submit three- to five-minute pieces talking to, with or praying for the children of our future. Selected works will be incorporated into the production of Love Letters to my Child, tobe presented Saturday, March 13, at Common Ground Theatre in Durham. Up to two works may be submitted in the form of letters, poems or songs.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, Lansdowne, Va.
The Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award will enable 10 students with artistic and creative merit and outstanding academic achievement to pursue a graduate degree in the fine arts, performing arts or creative writing at an accredited graduate institution in the U.S. or abroad. The award will provide funding for tuition, room and board, required fees and books, and is renewable for up to three years.

American Dance Festival, Durham
Each summer during its annual season, the ADF offers internships in all areas of arts administration and production. Administrative internships are intended to give hands-on experience to those interested in a career in arts management. Production interns work on the crew for the 40-plus performances of the ADF season. Interns receive a stipend, one class through the ADF six-week school and a complimentary ticket to each program in the ADF season.

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, West Branch, Iowa 
The Herbert Hoover National Historic Site seeks professional American artists whose work can be inspired by the history and beauty of Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. The park offers two residencies of two to four weeks each from May through September. Artists in all genres will be considered.

Literary Arts

Southeastern Community College, Whiteville
Southeastern Community College’s journal of arts and literature, Aries, is currently seeking submissions for the 2011 fall issue. All genres of writing are accepted year round. Poetry submissions are automatically entered for the Royce Ray Poetry Prize, which awards $100 to the writer, plus a reception and certificate. Aries is published annually and strives to showcase North Carolina writers.

The Betty Drevniok Award, Ontario, Canada
Entries are being accepted for the 2011 Betty Drevniok Award for haiku. Writers are asked to submit two copies of each haiku. Entries must be unpublished and not under consideration elsewhere. Cash prizes will be awarded as well as publication in Haiku Canada Anthology. Entry fee applies.

North Carolina Writers’ Network, Winston-Salem
The North Carolina Writers’ Network is now accepting submissions for its annual Doris Betts Fiction Prize, administered by the North Carolina Literary Review. The Doris Betts Fiction Prize awards $250 and publication in the NCLR to the author of the winning short story of up to 6,000 words. The contest is open to any writer who is a legal resident of N.C., a member of the N.C. Writers’ Network or a subscriber to the NCLR.

Vermont Studio Center, Johnston, Vt.
Vermont Studio Center awards a number of fellowships for four-week residencies throughout the year. They are open to all visual artists and writers. In addition to the residency awards, a variety of special fellowships are also available for full or partial funding.

North Carolina Symphony, Raleigh
The North Carolina Symphony is hosting a contest to develop a mascot for its NCS Kids brand. The NCS Kids mascot will be used in both print advertising and electronic promotions. The contest is open to all graphic designers, illustrators and artists ages 18 or older. The mascot can be any person, animal or object, realistic or abstract, though designs that incorporate instrumental music or music performance are encouraged.

The Sun Magazine, Chapel Hill
The Sun is offering three full scholarships to aspiring and established N.C. writers to attend Into the Fire, a writers’ retreat at Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland, N.C., Friday, April 8, through Sunday, April 10. Participants will join The Sun contributors and staff in workshops and discussions for a weekend of investigating our lives through the written word.

ukiaHaiku Festival, Ukiah, Calif.
The ninth annual ukiaHaiku festival and competition encourages local, national and international submissions from poets age 19 and older to the Jane Reichhold International Prize category. The 2011 festival will be held Sunday, May 1, in Ukiah, Calif. (whose name spelled backwards is “haiku”). Winners’ poems will be read at the festival and cash prizes will be awarded. Pitt County Arts Council, Greenville
Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge has issued a call for entries to artists ages 18 and older for the 2011 Down East Sculpture Exhibition Friday, March 4, through Friday, April 1. New York City Department of Transportation, New York, N.Y.
New York City DOT invites artists to submit applications to paint selected barrier sites around the city. DOT will help oversee artwork production, translation and design implementation. Each selected artist will be assigned a site within one of the five boroughs and will be responsible for translating the design and overseeing the painting of the design onto the barriers with assistance from N.Y. Community Cleanup and N.Y. Cares volunteers.

Light Space & Time Gallery, Jupiter, Fla.
Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents its juried competition open to all two-dimensional artists. Submissions based on the theme “Animals” will be accepted for inclusion into the March 2011 online group exhibition. Allegany Arts Council, Cumberland, Md.
The third annual Mountain Maryland Plein Air Competition is open to all national and international artists. The 2011 Mountain Maryland Plein Air event will take place Tuesday, May 31, through Sunday, June 12, throughout Allegany and Garrett Counties in western Maryland. Only 30 artists will be invited to participate. Applicants may submit up to three digital images on CD. All images must be original “plein air” artwork, created by the applicant artist and completed within the past two years. Cash prizes totaling $5,000 will be awarded.

Filmmakers

Southern Arts Federation
Southern Arts Federation is now accepting applications from organizations to bring the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers to their communities. Southern Circuit is the nation's only regional tour of independent filmmakers, providing communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent film. Southern Circuit host venues will receive six independent films and their filmmakers, paid travel for filmmakers (airfare, car rental, lodging and meals), promotional materials and a grant to provide a $300 stipend to each visiting filmmaker.
