The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

General Arts Opportunities

National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, D.C.
The National Endowment for the Arts invites artists to submit proposals for a design for the new "Art Works" logo for the NEA and then produce a finished design that may be reproduced by the agency in print and online. Arts Works is a new program of NEA Chair Rocco Landesman.

Performing Artists

American Dance Festival, Durham
The American Dance Festival will embark on a 14-city tour in February to audition potential students for tuition scholarships for the 2010 ADF Six Week School. Tuition scholarships are offered to promising students who have a high level of technical ability and creative potential and who have experience in either performing or choreographing. The awards are based on both ability and financial need. Students unable to attend an audition may submit a DVD containing two minutes of technique and a one-and-a-half minute solo along with their application package.

Literary Artists

North Carolina Writers' Network
The Randall Jarrell Poetry Competition accepts one-poem submissions. The contest awards the winner publication in the Crucible literary journal and $200.

Pittsboro Morning Out
The Pittsboro Morning Out Writing Contest is accepting submissions of nonfiction, memoir or essay on the subject of winter. Submissions should be 1,200 words or less and from residents of Chatham County. Entrants' names must not appear on the submissions; include a cover page with name, e-mail, phone number and word count. Submit as an attachment (.doc or .txt) to Al Manning at amanning@richkwok.com.

Visual Artists

Flat Rock Playhouse, Flat Rock
All artists of fine, contemporary craft are invited to apply for the first Flat Rock Playhouse Craft Show. This is a juried art show and all applicants will be notified by e-mail of jury decision during the week of February 15. The craft show will be held at the YouTheatre of Flat Rock Playhouse.

Fayetteville Art Guild
The Fayetteville Art Guild is accepting entries for the spring 2010 juried art show Creative Impulse. The show will be held Friday, Feb. 26, through Saturday, March 20, at Gallery One13 in Fayetteville and is open to all artists 18 years of age and older residing in Cumberland and surrounding counties, Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Deadline: Hand deliver artwork to Gallery One13, 113 Gillespie Street, on Friday, Feb. 19, and Saturday, Feb. 20, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Lexington Art League, Ky.
Alternate Selves is an exhibition that explores the transformative power of costume and will be held Friday, April 23, through Saturday, June 26. Through theater, annual holiday celebrations (such as Halloween and Mardi Gras) and even contemporary drag shows, costumes have allowed the wearer to reveal a new identity or at times hide from their own. Artists creating wearable items or those using costume, disguise, masks, etc., as primary thematic elements in their work may apply. Artists are encouraged to creatively interpret the theme. Two-dimensional, three-dimensional and time-based entries will be considered.

Emory & Henry College, Emory, Va.
Emory & Henry College will commission an original life-size, full-body bronze sculpture created in the historical likeness of Patrick Henry as statesman/governor and install this work outdoors within the college's central campus area. Emory & Henry is also considering the possibility of a second sculpture depicting John Emory. Submit the preliminary proposals by mail in one envelope to Anita Coulthard, Arts Coordinator, P.O. Visual Arts Alliance, Houston, Tex.
The Visual Arts Alliance 27th Juried Open Exhibition is open to all U.S. artists 18 years of age and older in all media except audio, video or performance. The exhibition will be held Thursday, April 29, through Friday, May 28.

City of Dubuque, Iowa
The City of Dubuque, Iowa, is soliciting applications from qualified artists over the age of 18 for the 2010–2010 Art on the River temporary outdoor public art exhibition. Each year 10 sculptures are chosen to be placed at highly visible locations along the picturesque Mississippi RiverWalk at the Port of Dubuque. Thousands of residents and visitors view the exhibition.

Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN), Denver, Colo.
CHUN Capitol Hill People's Fair — one of the largest two-day festivals in the country with over 250,000 fairgoers and one of Colorado's longest running outdoor festivals — seeks arts and craft exhibitors for this year's event Saturday, June 5, and Sunday, June 6. The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, Tenn.
The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to announce availability of the next Betsy Worden Memorial Artist Residency at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The residency is available to college students and other young and emerging artists. The resident artist is required to occupy the studio and be present to show new work each first Friday of the month, spend a significant amount of time creating work in the Emporium studio, and help hang monthly changing exhibitions in the Emporium galleries if necessary. Artist may also offer curatorial input and be eligible for curatorial opportunities in programming gallery space.

Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce
The Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce is seeking local artists to design the 2010 Washington Summer Festival T-shirt. The Summer Festival T-shirt is a keepsake for many citizens of Washington and thousands of T-shirts are sold. The design should be reflective of the downtown Washington area and should include some type of boat and a crab. The design should be three colors (including white) and include "Washington Summer Festival 2010." Two different designs are needed: one for the adult shirts and one for the children's shirts. The winners will have their design and signature on the T-shirts, receive a plaque and be recognized in all publicity.
