The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying. Artist opportunities may be submitted to jennifer.huggins@ncdcr.gov.

General Artist Opportunities

N.C. Arts Council, Regional Artist Project Grants Program
This program provides the opportunity for regional consortia of local arts councils to award project grants to artists in their regions. These grants support professional artists in any discipline and at any stage in their careers to pursue projects that further their professional development.

Penland School of Crafts and Creative Capital Foundation

Penland and the Creative Capital Professional Development Program are presenting two workshops for artists in western North Carolina in September: a one-day workshop focused on strategic planning and marketing/public relations on Thursday, September 10; and a two-and-a-half day workshop in self-management, strategic planning, fundraising and marketing/public relations, September 11–13. Creative Capital is nationally known for its artist training curricula and faculty.

Performing Artists

Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership
A special six-week pilot program called "Franklin Street Comes Alive!," is underway in Chapel Hill to encourage more people to visit downtown and support local businesses while enjoying a welcoming and musical environment along the way. Through this program local artists are hired to play live music or perform entertainment in designated areas along the sidewalk on Franklin Street on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7–10 p.m. This program will run through mid-September.

Literary Arts

The Writers' Workshop, Asheville
The Writer's Workshop is sponsoring the "Hard Times Writing Contest." Write about a difficult experience in your life, how you overcame this obstacle, and how you were changed by it. Winning stories will be chosen for originality and creative writing style. Stories should be previously unpublished and should not exceed 4,000 words. Multiple entries are accepted. Cash awards for first, second and third place winners.

Anderbo.com
Anderbo.com is seeking to post one unpublished entire novel on its Web site by December 1 for at least the six months. The Web site will look at the first 30 pages (up to 10,000 words) of your e-manuscript and decide within sixty days if they want to see more. There is no reading fee and all literary rights will remain with the author. An honorarium will be paid to the selected author.

Sleepy Hollow Books
Sleepy Hollow Books is currently accepting manuscripts for its inaugural publication. The publisher seeks unpublished manuscripts of original fiction for highly conscious children of all ages. Topics of interest: stories of our ancestors, nature or wonder tales, new ways of seeing or being. Multiple submissions are welcomed. No fees to participate or submit.

To The Bone Literary Journal, Chapel Hill
To The Bone, a literary journal dedicated to personal, moving art, is seeking submissions. The literary magazine aspires to rise above high-brow expectations and publish art for the common man or woman. To The Bone wants to look at difficult issues straight in the eye.

Memoirs, Ink., Culver City, Calif.
Memoirs, Ink. is looking for memoirs, personal essays or creative nonfiction stories on any topic, maximum of 3,000 words. Cash prizes up to $1,000. Entry fee applies.

LifeBytes Book, Emerson, N.J.
LifeBytes…Real Stories will be a compilation of the true stories about the ups and downs of cyber dating. We are looking for evocative stories that are funny, poignant, provocative, scary, weird, sexy, edgy, or happy—the full range of experiences that make online dating such an adventure. Writers whose work is chosen for publication will receive payment for their story in the market range of $50-$100.

Visual Artists

N.C. Arts Council and Duke Homestead, Durham
Craft artists are invited to sell their wares at the Tobacco Harvest and Hornworm Arts Festival which will take place September 12 at Duke Homestead. It is free to participate in this outdoor festival. Artists will need to supply their own tables, tents and other set-up materials. Space availability is limited. Artists will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. All effort will be made to ensure that craft forms are equally represented.

Cabarrus Arts Council, Concord
The Cabarrus Arts Council announces the Cabarrus Art Guild Juried Exhibition open to artists 18 years or older residing in Cabarrus, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly and Union Counties. Works to be considered must be hand-delivered to the Cabarrus Arts Council Galleries (Historic Courthouse) at 65 Union Street South, Concord, N.C. on Aug. 14 or Aug. 17.

The Philadelphia Sketch Club
The Miniatures at the Philadelphia Sketch Club juried exhibition is seeking all 2D mediums. All submitted work must be offered for sale during the exhibition. Maximum framed size 8"x10" and image size up to 5 "x 7."

artSPARK, Raleigh
Produced by Visual Art Exchange, artSPARK is all of the visual arts components of SPARKcon, a multidisciplinary arts festival in downtown Raleigh September 17–20. This year, artSPARK will feature street painting, site-specific installations, plein air painters, a digital gallery, experimental video and more! Associated Artists of Winton-Salem
Associated Artists announces a call for entries for the national juried exhibition "Cultural Crossroads." Artists are encouraged to consider many aspects of the theme—from their own traditional historical cultural perspectives to the ways in which travel or other cross-cultural experiences have influenced their expression and creativity. Works in all fine art media completed within the last five years are eligible.

Ohio Arts Council
The Ohio Percent for Art Program and Cleveland State University (CSU) invite national artists to submit digital images of past work for consideration of a new commissioned work. The artwork should reflect Education and Human Services (Nursing, Education and Counseling) in a non-literal, abstract way. It should be contemporary, elegant and dynamic with a sense of movement and energy.

The Town of Chapel Hill
The 2009-10 Sculpture Visions Exhibition is open to all artists creating original 3D artwork of a scale and material suitable for outdoor display. Artwork by selected artists will be displayed in outdoor public spaces in Chapel Hill from October 2009–October 2010.Selected artists will receive a $1,500 honorarium for the exhibition of their work.

Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Ormond Beach, Fla.
The Ormond Memorial Art Museum is seeking submissions from artists to design, build and install an outdoor, site-specific, 3D tribute to veterans who served in the Korean Conflict. It is open to all professional artists with previous experience in implementing their work in outdoor, public settings.

Caldwell Arts Council, Lenoir
The Caldwell Arts Council is seeking artists to participate in the annual Satie's Holiday Show & Sale, December 3–24. The Arts Council's gallery is turned into a lovely holiday gift shop open to the public. Items to be considered for the holiday sale will be juried by committee. All items must be handmade.

Louisiana Arts and Artists' Guild, Baton Rouge, La.
The 40th Annual River Road Show is a juried competition that will take place December 2–January 29, 2010 and is open to U.S. artists over the age of 18. LAAG is accepting original 2D art, with the exception of photography or digital works. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, Tenn.
The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville and the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) announce a call for entries for the "Arts in the Airport" exhibition, a juried exhibition developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area.The selected art will feature contemporary 2D artwork and will be exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport's security gate checkpoint from October 23, 2009 – April 22, 2010.

Bon Air Artists Association, Richmond, Va.
The 17th Annual Art Affair Show and Sale is open to artists across various mediums. It will be held October 17–18 on the grounds of Stony Point Fashion Park in Richmond, Virginia. The show offers an opportunity for the public to see and purchase original fine art produced by top quality artists and craft people.

Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, Tenn.
The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2009.The National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete and display their work on a national scale. The selected art features both traditional and non-traditional work and will be exhibited at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, from December 14–January 29, 2010.Cash prizes will be awarded.

Visual Overture Magazine, Atlanta, Ga.
"Spotlight on the South" is a special section in Visual Overture Magazine featuring one artist from the Southern Atlantic region (Va., N.C., S.C., Ga., Fla.). "Spotlight on the South" seeks work from emerging artists that relevantly describes the culture and attitude of the Southern Atlantic region.Artists must be full-time residents of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia or Florida to participate.

The Dayton International Peace Museum, Dayton, Ohio
"The Art of Peace" exhibition will commemorate the 14th anniversary of the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords that resulted in an end to the Bosnia-Herzegovina conflict. The focus is on nonviolent solutions that can be used to foster peace. The exhibition will run October 22–November 1.
