General Arts Opportunities

The Surdna Foundation, New York, N.Y.
The Surdna Foundation invites arts teachers from public arts high schools to apply for funding for artistic development through its Arts Teachers Fellowship Program. Eligible schools include specialized public arts high schools, as well as arts-focused, magnet and charter high schools. The program offers teachers the opportunity to immerse themselves in their own creative work, interact with other professional artists and stay current with new practices.

North Carolina Poetry Society
The North Carolina Poetry Society announces the seventh year of the Gilbert–Chappell Distinguished Poet Series (GCDPS). In this series, poets in middle school, high school and college as well as adults are invited to apply to be mentored by a Distinguished Poet (DP) in eastern, central or western North Carolina. Three DPs will mentor four student poets each. GCDPS student poets will work with DPs for four to six months on a dozen pages of their original poetry and then read at a regional college or university with other student poets and their mentor in April 2010.

Visual Artists

City of Columbia, Mo.
The City of Columbia, Missouri, Office of Cultural Affairs invites artists legally residing in the U.S. to apply for a public art project for its planned parking garage at Fifth and Walnut Streets. An artist or artist team is sought to create new site-specific, original public art for the building and/or overall site. The LoDi Project, Raleigh
The LoDi Project is asking artists to address the theme of "Architectural Spaces" for a November 2009 exhibition. How does architecture inspire your art? Work can be as technical as architectural construction drawings and plans, or looser interpretations such as photographs or paintings based on current and ancient architectural structures. Traditional and non-traditional styles and media are welcome. The exhibition will run Nov. 6–25.

North Carolina State University, Raleigh
NC State students, staff, faculty and alumni are invited to submit up to two pieces of original 2D or 3D artwork for the Hang It Up! open hanging at the Gregg Museum. The six-week exhibition will run Oct. 22–Dec. 19. All work must be ready to be exhibited when dropped off.

Deadline: Artwork must be dropped off October 14 from 3–6 p.m. or October 15 from 3–6 p.m. at the Gregg Museum (2nd floor, Talley Student Center).

The Airports Authority is seeking artists who will create artwork for three permanent installations intended to welcome arriving international passengers to the U.S. and the National Capital Region, to enhance their travel experience and to promote the cultural diversity of the National Capital Region.

Dublin Arts Council, Dublin, Ohio
Dublin Arts Council is issuing a national call to artists for a commission to create and install a permanent, 3D site-specific public artwork that will recognize and celebrate the 2010 Bicentennial of the City of Dublin, Ohio. The call is open to all professional artists who are U.S. citizens and live and work in the United States. The Bicentennial Public Artwork will be installed in October 2010 on the site of the historic Karrer Barn, a bank barn built in the late-1870s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The artwork will be relevant to Dublin's past, present and future, respectful to the historic site and will have a powerful artistic impact. An all-inclusive budget of $150,000 applies.

Utah Arts Council/University of Utah
University of Utah College of Nursing calls for artists' letters of interest and qualifications for the creation of public artwork for its newly remodeled facility. The Artist Selection Committee wants to integrate art into this newly remodeled facility that will respond to the students, faculty and this place of teaching and learning the art and science of human caring.

City of Sarasota, Fla.
The City of Sarasota is issuing a national call to artists for a sculpture to be installed within Fredd "Glossie" Atkins Park. No theme for the artwork has been mandated; however, artists are requested to keep in mind the historical significance of the African-American community where Fredd "Glossie" Atkins Park is located. Three finalists will be selected by late October to give presentations by no later than December 15 to the Selection Committee. The three finalists will receive a stipend of $1,000 to cover expenses incurred for all submission requirements and travel. Overall project budget is $75,000.

City of Alexandria, Va.
The City of Alexandria, Va., seeks to commission public art for the Alexandria Police Headquarters, currently under construction. There are no geographic requirements on the location of the artists. The art will be paid for by private donations and grants. Installation is anticipated to be in 2011. Artists interested in applying to the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) are encouraged to register with the City of Alexandria's e-procure system located at eprocure.alexandriava.gov/bso.  The projected budget for this project is $300,000.

The 2010 Valdosta National Exhibition to be held Jan. 19–Feb. 5 is open to all artists living in the U.S. over the age of 18. Works may be in any medium, traditional or experimental. Baton Rouge Gallery announces its second annual Surreal Salon, a national juried exhibition Jan. 3–28, 2010. HarborArts, Boston, Mass.
HarborArts, Inc., is a non-profit organization that uses monumental art installations to raise awareness and to educate the public about social, economic and environmental issues affecting our harbors, waterways and oceans. HarborArts seeks to implement an outdoor artwork loan program for a limited number of large-scale 2D and 3D works at Boston Harbor Shipyard in East Boston, Mass. Works will be exhibited on a rotating schedule lasting a minimum of 3 months to several years, depending on availability and feasibility. Approximately 12–20 works will be installed. Artists will receive a $500 stipend to go toward the cost of transportation and installation. Artists are also invited to offer work for sale.

The Visual Art Center announces an open call for entries for the 7th Biennial National Art Exhibition to be held Feb. 8–March 12, 2010. This exhibition is limited to 2D paintings and drawings in oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, charcoal, colored pencil, graphite or a combination thereof executed in the last two years. TransCultural Exchange is now accepting proposals for its spring 2011 exhibition series Here, There and Everywhere: The Art of Collaboration. TransCultural Exchange invites artists working in all disciplines to reach out to individuals around the world to create works for this second series of collaborative exhibitions. Exhibitions of the resultant collaborative projects will be included in TransCultural Exchange's catalog for Here, There and Everywhere: The Art of Collaboration, on the organization's Web site and at the 2011 Conference on International Opportunities in the Arts, which will take place in Boston April 8–10, 2011.

Gen Art Film Festival, New York, N.Y.
Gen Art is currently accepting submissions for both short and feature film categories for the 2010 festival April 7–13 in N.Y. The Gen Art Film Festival only shows one short and one feature each night, and every premiere is followed by a legendary party at one of New York's hottest spots with VIP treatment for filmmakers in attendance. Shorts can be anywhere between 1 and 27 minutes, and features qualify at a minimum length of one hour.
