Watch a video introduction to the cARTwheels program. cARTwheels is an educational performing arts touring program that ensures that third, fourth and fifth grade students in the state experience free professionally-staged opera, dance, theater, and music performances at quality venues before they leave elementary school. cARTwheels stimulates thinking and learning through early exposure to the performing arts. Dear Educator:The arts are vital, enthralling and relevant to the education and enrichment of children across North Carolina. cARTwheels is a touring program of the North Carolina Arts Council designed to stimulate student thinking and learning through early exposure to the performing arts. The Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources, has created these Web pages to introduce you to the program, the companies, and to help you build connections for your students between the performances and the curriculum. Studies have found that early exposure to the arts provides critical benefits that help students succeed. The arts influence how children think, interpret, imagine and communicate—skills essential to success in school, work and life. cARTwheels assists communities in their efforts to develop "whole" children who will eventually become thoughtful, contributing members of society, as well as future patrons of the arts. We invite you explore these materials and share them with your students. They will add excitement to your teaching, spark students' imaginations, stimulate creative, conceptual thinking, and hopefully, create a richer classroom experience.
