Artist Fellowships Overview

Please note: These are the updated guidelines for the November 2009 deadline for the visual art, craft, film/video, and choreography categories. However, writers, songwriters, composers, playwrights, and screenwriters, who will be eligible to apply again in November 2010 may find the previous guideline information for these categories helpful, provided you understand that some changes may be made when the copy is revised next year. No applications for the 2010 deadline will be accepted before the new guidelines and application are posted next September.

Who May Apply
The program operates on a two-year cycle. Choreographers, craft artists, film/video artists, and visual artists are eligible to apply for the November 2, 2009 deadline.

If you received a fellowship for 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, or 2009-2010 you are not eligible to apply this year. You may not receive a fellowship and a residency center grant in the same year.

You may submit only one fellowship application per year. If you work in collaboration with one or more artists, only one member of the collaborative team should submit the application on behalf of the group; however, the names of all collaborating members must be included in the application.

Composers of jazz, chamber, electronic, experimental, and symphonic music; songwriters; playwrights and screenwriters; spoken-word artists; and writers of fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, and literary translation will be eligible to apply for the November 1, 2010 deadline.

If you apply for a fellowship you must sign a statement on the application form certifying that you:

  • are at least 18 years old;
  • are a U.S. citizen or holder of permanent resident alien status;
  • have been a year-round resident of North Carolina for at least one year immediately prior to the application deadline;
  • will remain a North Carolina resident during the grant period and be physically present in the state for the majority of the grant period;
  • were not enrolled at the time of application and will not be enrolled during the grant period in an academic or degree-granting program.

If you are recommended for a fellowship we will require you to supply proof of current North Carolina residency status and to sign a contract pledging your compliance with the eligibility rules listed above.

What We Fund
We award fellowships in the amount of $10,000 to support the creative development of North Carolina artists and to generate the creation of new work. If you receive a fellowship you may use the grant to:

  • Set aside time to work
  • Pursue projects that further artistic development and support the realization of specific creative ideas
  • Buy supplies and equipment

You may also use a fellowship for expenses related to the activities listed above. These may include costs related to studio construction or improvements. You may not use a fellowship to support academic research or formal study toward an academic or professional degree.

How We Make Funding Decisions
A panel of professionals with expertise in your discipline will review all the applications submitted in your category. (North Carolina Arts Council staff does not screen the applications, except for completeness and eligibility.) The primary evaluation criterion will be artistic excellence based on work samples submitted with the application. In making its final recommendations, the panel will also take into consideration your description of how you plan to use a fellowship and how the grant will make a difference in your work as an artist.

Deadline and Project Period
We must receive your application and work sample online and in our office by 5 p.m. on November 2, 2009. We do not accept fax transmissions. All grant-related activities must take place between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.
